For 2016, Springfield now introduces the XDS 40 S&W Bi-Tone Essentials Package , so you can choose the mix of power and capacity that makes you comfortable. Like the originals, the new XDS .40SW comes with both flush (six-round) and Mid-Mag (seven-round) magazines, so capacity of the new .40SW model sits right between that of the 9MM and .45ACP XD-S®.
Springfield contains all of the basics you need for your XDS 3.3-inch 40 S&W Bi-Tone - minus the ammo, of course. This slimmed down package includes your pistol, two magazines, two interchangeable backstraps that allow you to custom fit your grip, a cable lock, and a bore brush, all inside of a lockable hard case. The two magazines that come with your XDS 40 S&W Bi-Tone Essentials Package include one 6-round flush-fitting magazine, along with Springfield’s brand new 7-round Mid-Mag with the X-Tension grip sleeve.

The only thing keeping this pistol from being a 5-star product, is the fit of the included 7-round mid magazine. It does work, but it takes some unusually excessive force to seat, and an equal amount of pressure on the release to eject. The included 6-round flush mount magazine works perfectly as expected. I've seen others write about similar occurrences so I'm not worried about it. The grip texture is very aggressive, and may be problematic at the range. However, the primary purpose of this weapon for me is CCW / Self Defense, and I find it reassuring to know that I can get great grip purchase on the weapon without anything additional. So far, I've only fired 26 rounds, split evenly between JHP and FMJ, and it's fired every time. The slide spring is stiff, but that's to be expected with larger calibers in smaller framed pistols. XDS does the job it was intended to do for me, and looks quite good doing imo. Form + function = Win!
